Structure of Cluster Knowledge Networks: Uneven and Selective, not Pervasive and Collective

January 01, 2005

This study focuses on the relationship between industrial clustering and innovation. It contributes to this literature by showing two empirical properties of the cluster learning process: first, that the structure of the knowledge network in a cluster is related with the heterogeneous distribution of firm knowledge bases and, second, that business interactions and knowledge flows are not highly co-occurring phenomena.

Santa Fe Plan: The Cluster Approach to Economic Gardening

January 01, 2005

The Santa Fe Plan calls on the community becoming more economically diverse while maintaining its quality of life by nurturing the growth of 10 different industry clusters first identified in 1996: biotechnology, publishing, information technologies, film/video production, medical practitioners, indigenous art, light manufacturing, furniture and furnishings, speciality agriculture and outdoor recreation equipment.

Regional Economic Development: Exploring the ‘Role of Government’ in Porter’s Industrial Cluster Theory

January 01, 2005

This analysis provides an insight into the set of government policy roles that facilitated the development of this internationally competitive industry cluster. This paper also proposes a re-conceptualisation of ICT that will potentially increase its value as a predictive tool for regional economic development.

Clusters as a Driving Engine for FDI

January 01, 2005

This paper develops a model that highlights the importance of clusters for attracting foreign direct investment. It shows from a game theoretical perspective how the combination of setting up a cluster and implementing policy reforms will be a key engine for attracting FDI. Based on agglomeration externalities, the paper shows that the very emergence of clusters can make investment so profitable that investors can even afford to tolerate more policy induced distortions than otherwise.

Entrepreneurial Founder Effects in the Growth of Regional Clusters: How Early Success is a Key Determinant

January 01, 2005

How can the growth of regional clusters be explained? This paper studies in great detail the growth of the wireless communication cluster in Northern Denmark. Unlike the dominant theories, we argue that initial success of the first firms are the main driving force behind the generation of new firms that eventually lead to the formation of clusters. The success of the first firms tend to generate spinoffs, which becomes successful themselves due to the background of the founders.

Cluster Dynamics and Innovation in SMEs: The Role of Culture

January 01, 2005

The paper presents some relevant case studies of technical assistance carried out by in the field
of industrial cooperation with several non-EU Mediterranean countries. In particular, the paper presents those case studies where initiatives were set up with a view to encourage cluster dynamics in regions where the main sector of activity is historically and culturally based.

Building Global Knowledge Pipelines: The Role of Temporary Clusters

January 01, 2005

The present paper compares temporary clusters with permanent clusters and other types of inter-firm interactions. If regular participation in temporary clusters can satisfy a firm’s need to learn through interaction with suppliers, customers, peers and rivals, why is the phenomenon of permanent spatial clustering of similar and related economic activity so pervasive?

Clustering of Auto Supplier Plants in the U.S.: GMM Spatial Logit for Large Samples

January 01, 2005

In this paper, the authors model the location decisions of auto supplier plants using probit models that take explicit account of the tendency for auto plants to cluster together.
Despite the rapid change in the geographic configuration of the industry, we show that
three salient features remain the same.
