Another bioscience company is looking to build its headquarters in Shawnee.
On Monday, Hans Rudolph Inc., an international designer and manufacturer of respiratory valves and other respiratory products, presented the city's Planning Commission with a site plan for its 30,510-square-foot office/warehouse building proposed for Perimeter Park.
Planners generally were supportive of the plan, but tabled consideration to allow more discussion on issues related to the exterior of the building.
The family-owned business was started by Hans Rudolph in the 1930s. In 1960, Hans and his son John Rudolph formed Hans Rudolph Inc.
The company, which does about 40 percent of its business outside the United States, designs products used both in the home and in hospital and university research labs.
Since the 1960s, the business has been in Kansas City, said Vice President Kevin Rudolph, Hans Rudolph's grandson.
The company now needs more space, however, and Shawnee is in its sights.
Jim Martin, director of the Shawnee Economic Development Council, said negotiations to bring Hans Rudolph Inc. to Shawnee have been under way for about a year.
"They are a quality company and have a long track record of success," he said. "They'll bring good jobs and are making a significant capital investment."
Hans Rudolph anticipates it would have 30 to 35 employees and make a $3 million investment in its proposed headquarters in Shawnee.
"I think in addition to those things, which are of foremost importance, Hans Rudolph will bring additional prestige to the community," Martin said. "It will be another business headquartered in Shawnee that is doing international business."
The company received some financial incentives from the state to come to Kansas and has applied for a tax abatement from Shawnee.
Under the city's financial incentive policy, Hans Rudolph would be eligible for a 65 percent tax abatement for 10 years. However, abatement requests need City Council approval.
