Federal government releases new advanced manufacturing strategy

October 11, 2018

In honor of National Manufacturing day last week, the Trump administration released the Strategy for American Leadership in Advanced Manufacturing. Developed in partnership with the National Science and Technology Council (NSTC) and the Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP), the report is intended to outline the administration’s vision for American leadership in advanced manufacturing across industrial sectors. It advocates pursuing three goals: develop and transition new manufacturing technologies; educate, train, and connect the manufacturing workforce; and, expand the capabilities of the domestic manufacturing supply chain.

To achieve these goals, the report highlights several action items including:

  • Develop public-private partnerships to create and transition new technologies in several key areas such as intelligent manufacturing systems, materials and processing technologies, medical devices, electronic design/fabrication, and food/agricultural manufacturing;
  • Update and expand career and technical education pathways;
  • Promote apprenticeships and access to industry-recognized credentials;
  • Support manufacturing-focused STEM initiatives;
  • Cultivate manufacturing innovation ecosystems through funding for R&D consortiums;
  • Increase the role of small and medium-sized manufacturers in advanced manufacturing; and,
  • Strengthen advanced manufacturing for rural communities.

Each of items highlighted in the report includes steps that the administration is taking, or potential steps that it will take, to realize results.
