Maryland Technology Transfer Fund 2008 Winner for the Commercializing Research category

Listen to a four-and-a-half-minute clip of SSTI's interview with TEDCO Director of Technology Transfer and Commercialization Jim Poulos or the full conversation (10 minutes).

The primary goal of the Maryland Technology Transfer Fund is to grow a technology-based economy in the state of Maryland. This is accomplished by providing financial and business assistance to early-stage companies, making them attractive for follow-on funding from angel investors and venture capitalists. Maryland companies with less than 16 employees are eligible for awards of up to $75,000, which defray the cost of R&D activities and push the company to the threshold of commercialization.

Since 2002, 126 companies that have been supported through the Maryland Technology Transfer Fund have completed their projects. With an investment of $7.5 million by TEDCO these companies have gone on to receive downstream funding nearing $276 million. This is a leverage of the state's investment of $37 to $1.
