What to Expect at an SSTI Annual Conference

October 07, 2009

SSTI’s Annual Conference offers a rich and rewarding slate of professional development opportunities for seasoned conference veterans and first-timers alike. Each year, SSTI helps connect TBED professionals to the ideas and perspectives making a difference in the regional innovation. The conference also provides a vibrant atmosphere where attendees can connect to the leading thinkers and practitioners in the field. You can expect:

  • An exciting mix of sessions incorporating both nuts-and-bolts advice for practitioners and long-range views on the future of technology-based economic development.
  • New perspectives on the future of the field and the strategies that will prepare regions for the next economy.
  • Stimulating dialogue and networking with the right people within the tech-based economic development community.
  • Ample opportunity to connect to colleagues.

Attendees will be able to participate in a number of activities and events that will allow them to network and have fun in a more casual environment. This year’s activities include something for everyone, such as:

  • Opening Reception – The Kansas Technology Enterprise Corporation has invited all attendees for champagne and jazz at the Sprint World Headquarters, Wednesday, October 21, 2009. Join us for networking in the Winter Garden atrium from 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. and hear Kansas leaders, technology officials and most importantly, famous Kansas City jazz. Following the reception, transportation will be provided to and from Town Center Plaza, an upscale entertainment center, featuring exceptional dining and shopping, and the Sheraton Overland Park Hotel where the conference is being held.
  • National Innovation Reception – Networking takes center stage at the National Innovation Reception sponsored by the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development. The evening provides the opportunity to continue conversations begun during the first day, reconnect with old friends and begin new relationships while you enjoy delicious hors d’oeuvres and a complimentary beverage. The reception provides the perfect opportunity to unwind in a relaxing setting exchanging ideas and meeting our sponsors at their exhibits.
  • Wii Room and Afterhours Lounge – Four Wii consoles and Plasma TVs, Rock Band, Mario Kart and an extended variety of sports! All experience levels encouraged and welcome. Or just stop by to have a drink and watch! Last year’s attendees had a blast getting to know each other better while rescuing princesses, racing for medals and rocking out. The fun is provided courtesy of Monster Public Sector & Education andGSP Consulting.
  • Hatha Yoga – Some say that the hardest part of getting into shape is getting started. How many times have you said, “Oh, I’m too busy...I’ll get started with my workout plan tomorrow.” Well, why don’t you start at the conference! Back by popular demand, yoga will be offered each morning of the conference to start your day! Yoga is a fun activity that can produce powerful results and will wake up your body, sharpen your mind, and clarify your spirit. Yoga doesn’t hurt, is only as difficult as you make it, and allows you to proceed at an individualized pace so it is great for beginners as well as more advanced practitioners.
  • Dine-A-Round – The Dine-A-Round is a perfect opportunity to take a break from learning and network with old friends and new! This year's Dine-A-Round features restaurants within 10 minutes of the hotel in the Overland Park and Leawood areas. Reservations have been made for Thursday, October 22 at 7 p.m. for eight people. Whether you are intrigued by the sophistication of Yia Yia’s Eurobistro or the fall-off-the-bone BBQ of Jack Stack’s, there is something for every taste.
