Governor to co-chair national study on medical records

DATELINE: NASHVILLE Tenn.

Gov. Phil Bredesen was chosen Monday to be a co-chairman of a national effort to improve health care through the use of electronic record-keeping.

The National Governors Association Center for Best Practices said Bredesen will join Vermont Gov. Jim Douglas in leading the NGA's State Alliance for eHealth.

"Through the State Alliance for eHealth, we hope to build consensus for electronic health information sharing that is cognizant of privacy concerns, addresses variations in state policies and recognizes the importance of a dialogue among states and the private sector," Bredesen said.

Earlier this year, Bredesen established a special advisory council to try making health care more efficient in Tennessee by accelerating eHealth solutions.

Bredesen's council comprises members from health care providers, employers, advocacy groups and consumers.
