Americas High-Tech Economy: Growth, Development and Risks for Metropolitan Areas

Using a series of applied econometric approaches, the Milken Institute examined the role of high technology industries in explaining the relative economic growth of metropolitan areas. They found that high-tech activity (measured by movements in the relative metro real high-tech output index and the 1990 location quotient in high-technology activity) can explain 65 percent of the growth differential between metros in the 1990s.

The study looks at data from 92 metropolitan regions to determine where job growth is happening and reveals which cities are losing their share of metropolitan area jobs, and which cities are outpacing their suburbs in job growth. Declining crime statistics, falling unemployment rates, balanced municipal budgets, and a resurgence in downtown living have cities across the country claiming that they are in the midst of a renaissance.

Ohio Thomas Edison Program: An Economic Impact Study

The report outlines major findings concerning the impact of the Ohio Thomas Edison Program. Results include participating firms realized cost savings of $296.9 million and increased sales of $708.6 million during the 1994-1998 periods. Jobs created and retained during this period equaled 3,346. Other total impacts on the state of Ohio economy are included as well.
