Foundations to Fund Moonshot R&D Initiatives at Universities in CA, IN, NY, PA, TX

As the 2015-2016 academic calendar comes to an end, several universities announced large financial contributions from foundations to address large societal issues including cancer and a variety of neurological disorders.  These large-scale initiatives will be undertaken at universities in California, Indiana, New York, Pennsylvania, and Texas.

Gates Foundation Reboots Strategy on College Completion

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is relaunching its advocacy agenda to create a more flexible, personalized, affordable and clear U.S. postsecondary education system. At the center of this agenda will be an effort to collect better metrics on student and institutional performance and to extend finance and financial aid options for lower income students.

Foundations increasingly are tapping into the unique skills of institutions of higher education by partnering with them to support entrepreneurial growth within their surrounding communities. These foundations view institutions of higher education as the ideal partners to provide education and business services necessary for entrepreneurs to reach their potential. Several foundations recently have announced funding to support entrepreneurship development activities at universities including the Ratcliffe Foundation and the Allstate Foundation.

Philanthropic Efforts Expand University Research, Entrepreneurship in U.S and Canada

Generous individuals and foundations are stepping up to support university-based initiatives designed to expand research and encourage young people to create high-growth jobs at a time when operating budgets for higher education are facing drastic funding cuts across the U.S. Colleges in Michigan and Ontario will establish endowed chairs in medical research and entrepreneurship with funding from individual donors, and a 23-year-old former student of the University of Waterloo is launching a $1 million seed fund for student startups.

SBA seeks public comment in two areas related to supply chains

The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) seeks public comment for two Requests for Information. The first, Supply Chain Gaps and Entrepreneur Assistance, is focused on the future of SBA’s Innovation Network Programs—FAST, GAFC, RICs—and how each program can align entrepreneur support in critical industry areas. These are programs that are relevant to TBED organizations, accelerators, incubators, investors, universities, research institutions, and tech transfer offices.

Slowing Q1 VC investment could mean more selective investors and difficult fundraising

Venture capital investments so far in 2026 are showing the same trends as 2025, with more funding going to fewer companies. According to PitchBook, quarterly U.S. VC investment totaled $267 billion, with the five largest deals raising a combined $195 billion, or over 73% of all Q1 capital. The heavy bias toward the top deals underscores the importance of narrowing the deal segments to understand what trends are faced by the majority of companies.
