EDA announced $184 million for six Recompete awards
The Distressed Area Recompete Pilot Program, a program authorized by the CHIPS and Science Act, targets areas where the share of prime-age (25-54 years) employment is significantly lower than the national average. The program’s goal, according to a press release from EDA, is “closing this gap through flexible, locally-driven investments.”
EDA has selected six implementation awardees for funding from the 22 Recompete Finalists, with individual award amounts to be finalized in the coming months.
Recompete implementation awardees are:
City of Allentown Recompete Plan (Pennsylvania)
Lead Agency: City of Allentown
Estimated Award Amount: $20 million
The City of Allentown will address barriers to employment, including skills/education gaps, transportation challenges, and a shortage of affordable, high-quality childcare.
North Olympic Peninsula Recompete Plan (Washington)
Lead Agency: Clallam County
Estimated Award Amount: $35 million
The North Olympic Peninsula Recompete Plan aims to revitalize the natural resources industries in the remote region of Washington State’s North Olympic Peninsula, an area which includes five Tribal nations.
- Oasis Expansion Recompete Plan (Puerto Rico)
Lead Agency: Platform for Social Impact
Estimated Award Amount: $30 million
The Oasis Expansion Recompete Plan will invest in economic development initiatives in the Villa Prades public housing community of San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Reinvest Birmingham Recompete Plan (Alabama)
Lead Agency: City of Birmingham
Estimated Award Amount: $20 million
The Reinvest Birmingham Recompete Plan will support the neighborhoods of North Birmingham, Northside, Pratt, and Smithfield.
The Eastern Kentucky Runway Recompete Plan (Kentucky)
Lead Agency: Shaping Our Appalachian Region (SOAR)
Estimated Award Amount: $40 million
The Eastern Kentucky Runway Recompete Plan aims to connect prime-age residents to resources and training for good jobs in a region of eastern Kentucky heavily impacted by the decline of coal mining.
Wind River Indigenous-based Economic Recompete Plan (Wyoming)
Lead Agency: Wind River Development Fund
Estimated Award Amount: $36 million
The Wind River Indigenous-based Economy Recompete Plan aims to catalyze an indigenous-led eco-tourism economy on the Wind River Reservation and in Fremont County, Wyoming.
