Baldrige Winners Outperform S&P 500 Again

The "Baldrige Index" for 1996 outperformed the Standard & Poor's 500 for the third year in a row, according to a study prepared by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The fictitious index is made up of winners of the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award. NIST "invested" a hypothetical $1,000 in each of the five publicly traded, whole company winners of the Baldrige Quality Award and a percentage of $1,000 in the parent companies of nine subsidiary winners. The percentage represented the number of employees the subsidiary has as a percentage of the whole company's employee base. An equal amount was hypothetically invested in the S&P 500 at the same time. NIST found that the group of five whole company winners outperformed the S&P 500 by 3.5 to 1, achieving a 380 percent return on investment compared to a 110 percent return for the S&P 500. Meanwhile, the group of all publicly traded winners (which includes the five whole company winners and the parent companies of winning subsidiaries) outperformed the S&P 500 by about 3 to 1, a 325…

Guide to NIST Available

The new Guide to NIST, a one-stop information resource on the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), is now available. The 164-page volume describes hundreds of different research projects, grants, industry outreach programs, services and facilities. The publication updates a 1993 edition. Requests for the guide can be faxed to 301/926-1630. An electronic version will be available online later this year on the NIST home page at http://www.nist.gov

Federal R&D Programs Report Now Online

The materials research and development programs of nine federal departments and agencies are available in a new report, The Federal Research and Development Program in Materials Science and Technology 1995. The report was developed as a guide for materials researchers in industry, government, and universities. The emphasis in the report is on R&D directly linked to industrial applications, particularly in the areas of aeronautics, automotive technology, electronics, environmental technology, and infrastructure. The organizations listed are: the Departments of Agriculture, Commerce, Defense, Energy, Health and Human Services, Interior, and Transportation; and NASA and the National Science Foundation. The report is available on the NIST Materials Science and Engineering Laboratory's homepage at http://www.msel.nist.gov. Click on the report's title in the "Technology Policy and Assessment Reports" section. The report is also available in printed form and on CD-ROM. ATP Public Meeting: Tools for DNA Diagnostics

The Advanced Technology Program (ATP) of the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) has announced a public meeting to bring together all ATP awardees of the ATP Tools for DNA Diagnostics program "to present an overview of the non-proprietary aspects of their research and development activities." The goals of the meeting are to: "inform the DNA diagnostics community about activities at this stage of the focused program, promote cross-fertilization of concepts and efforts, promote strategic partnering across companies and other organizations, accelerate commercialization of emerging technologies, and promote networking." The meeting will be held September 9-10 at NIST headquarters in Gaithersburg, MD. Since 1994, ATP has supported a focused initiative in Tools for DNA Diagnostics. The goal of this initiative has been "to develop cost-effective methods to determine, analyze, and store DNA sequences for a wide variety of diagnostic applications." Currently, the initiative has provided $106 million worth of ATP funding, includes 22 industrial projects, and has leveraged $99 million of…

MEP Eases Access to Services

Small and medium-sized manufacturers looking for assistance in solving technical and business problems now have improved access to the Manufacturing Extension Partnership (MEP). MEP is a nationwide network of locally managed centers in 42 states and Puerto Rico offering technical assistance to smaller manufacturers. Dialing 1-800-MEP-4MFG will directly link companies with the nearest MEP affiliate or to MEP headquarters in Gaithersburg, Maryland. Those with access to the World Wide Web can also find information on the MEP home page at http://www.mep.nist.gov. The page, called "The MEP Source", includes a map highlighting centers and field offices. The Source includes information both for companies and for those who operate the centers.
