Texas A&M University issued the following news release:

The Richard Ewing Award for Excellence in Science, Technology, and Economic Development has been established in recognition of the contributions made by Richard E. Ewing, vice president for research and Distinguished Professor of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics at Texas A&M University, throughout his outstanding career.

"Texas A&M University established this award to recognize individuals either from private or public sectors, whose contributions have fostered economic development through the promotion of science, technology, and commercialization," says Robert M. Gates, president of Texas A&M University.

The award, made possible through the generous contributions of Mr. Luis Alberto Cruz, director general of AVQ Consultaria Integral, S.C., Mexico, and Texas A&M University's International Programs Office, was announced at a Joint Conference Banquet held in conjunction with the Eighth IMACS International Symposium on Iterative Methods in Scientific Computation and A Scientific Celebration of Professor Richard E. Ewing.

"While Dick provides tremendous leadership for the University's research endeavors, I never cease to be amazed by the tremendous output to his personal research program on top of all that I know he does for the University," says David Prior, executive vice president and provost at Texas A&M.

Ewing holds the Mobil Technology Chair in Computational Science, a Texas Engineering Experiment Station Distinguished Research Chair, and is director of the Institute for Scientific Computation at Texas A&M. He received his doctorate from The University of Texas at Austin. Ewing has extensive experience in industrial partnerships through his research collaborations, and serves on the board of directors of the National Space Biomedical Research Institute, the Texas Institute for Genomic Medicine, the Houston Technology Center, the Texas A&M Research Foundation, the Associated Western Universities Group, the Southwestern Universities Research Association, and the Texas Healthcare and Biosciences Institute. Ewing has received over 27 honors and awards, including the 2005 Humboldt Research Award for Senior U.S. Scientists and election to Academia Europaea, Foreign Member. He has over 350 publications, 15 books and special volumes, and over 500 invited talks and presentations in 35 countries.
