TBED Community of Practice explores the importance of early customer discovery

Wednesday, June 24, 2026

This week's joint meeting of the Lab-to-Market and Entrepreneurship Development subcommunities of SSTI's TBED Community of Practice focused on how the NSF I-Corps and DOE Energy I-Corps programs help researchers move discoveries beyond the lab and toward real-world use. A central theme was the importance of engaging potential customers early, testing market assumptions, and confirming the existence of a real need before investing significant resources in technology development.

What TBED investors need to know about exits

Thursday, June 4, 2026
The venture capital market is undergoing significant structural changes, and TBED organizations are under increasing pressure to adjust existing and develop new strategies to meet evolving market conditions and address emerging gaps. For TBED investors, modeling how long investments must be held and what the exit paths are is critical for setting expectations with stakeholders, projecting fund utilization, and anticipating returns that can be reinvested. To that end, SSTI examined over 6,000 exits from VC-backed companies listed in PitchBook with identified nonprofit or government investments to characterize what TBED investors can expect. Our analysis found that it is taking more time and more rounds for companies to find successful exits, putting additional pressure on venture development organization (VDO) and other TBED portfolios by consuming scarce resources and limiting opportunities to reinvest proceeds.

Recent Research: Are new ideas really getting harder to find?

Thursday, June 4, 2026
A new working paper from researchers affiliated with the U.S. Census Bureau and several universities revisits one of the biggest questions in innovation policy: why has productivity growth slowed even as research and development spending continues to rise? For the technology-based economic development (TBED) community, the answer matters because it shapes how states, regions, and federal agencies think about innovation investments.

Recent Research: What two new studies tell us about innovation networks

Thursday, May 21, 2026

Two recent research papers approach entrepreneurship and innovation from very different perspectives but arrive at a similar conclusion about how regional economies grow and change over time. Keeping technology-based economic development (TBED) initiatives proactively thinking about and addressing that evolution is a central aspect of all SSTI TBED-focused programming. Empirical research, like is discussed below, provides external evidence of how needs are changing and programs may want to adapt.

Slowing Q1 VC investment could mean more selective investors and difficult fundraising

Wednesday, May 6, 2026
Venture capital investments so far in 2026 are showing the same trends as 2025, with more funding going to fewer companies. According to PitchBook, quarterly U.S. VC investment totaled $267 billion, with the five largest deals raising a combined $195 billion, or over 73% of all Q1 capital. The heavy bias toward the top deals underscores the importance of narrowing the deal segments to understand what trends are faced by the majority of companies.

What happened in 2018 that is still affecting new college grads seeking jobs?

Wednesday, May 6, 2026
Historically, college graduates, recently matriculated or old alums, were more likely to be employed than all workers combined. However, beginning in 2015, as the labor market data released by the Federal Reserve Bank of New York shows in the graph below, unemployment rates for recent college graduates and all workers were in relatively tight competition until October 2018, when new grads began experiencing higher unemployment rates than all workers—a position they have held ever since. Might it have something to do with the degrees students are earning and changes in the job market?

OSTP plan calls for overhauling US approach to R&D, innovation

Wednesday, July 22, 2026

The White House report from  Office of Science and Technology Policy (OSTP) Director Michael Kratsios, Science: A New Golden Age, first announced in a July 22 Wall Street Journal article, iterates federal R&D policies and practices for FY 2028, outlines an almost industrial policy approach to federal investment, and provides a plan to move federal research programs toward a focus on individual scientists rather than university-based programs. It calls for more flexible, multidisciplinary, and multi-organizational, team-oriented research projects rather than centers housed within the nation’s research institutions.

State budget wrap-up: Notable TBED and innovation funding in FY 2027

Wednesday, July 22, 2026
As revenues continue to tighten, many states entered fiscal year 2027 (FY 2027)—which began July 1 for most—with cautious or constrained spending priorities. With the exception of South Carolina, all states have now enacted their FY 2027 budgets. Most adopted maintenance‑level or reduced spending plans that limited new recurring expenditures, reduced one‑time appropriations, and reprioritized core services such as Medicaid and education.
