The Biotechnology Industry Organization (BIO) released State Government Initiatives in Biotechnology 2001, the results of the first comprehensive survey of state government efforts to attract and grow the biotechnology industry. The report, prepared by Battelle Memorial Institute and the State Science and Technology Institute (SSTI), contains information from 48 states and shows state governments becoming increasingly active in recruiting and supporting biotechnology companies.

The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), through the Mathematics Education Trust, funds special projects that enhance the teaching and learning of mathematics at all levels. An organization valuing the use of instructional technology tools, NCTM currently has at least 10 grant opportunities supporting in-service programs, the improvement of professional competence and other related causes.
For many states, increasing industrial research and development (R&D) within the state's academic research institutions is a priority. Some state tech-based economic development agencies offer financial assistance, such as matching grants to foster greater university-industry research collaboration. Some offer tax credits to companies for research expenditures within the state higher education community.
