Useful Stats: U.S. Venture Capital Investment 1995-2010 and Investment by State 2010

Wednesday, February 2, 2011

U.S. venture capitalists invested $21.8 billion in 2010, a 19.4 percent increase over 2009 and the first increase in venture investment since 2007, according to the National Venture Capital Association (NVCA) and PricewaterhouseCoopers Moneytree Survey. The growth in activity affected nearly every industry, particularly clean energy software and Internet-specific companies. Early stage investments, though not seed stage investments, grew by double-digits as did first-time financings. In addition to the gains in venture dollars, VC deals grew to 3,277, a 12 percent increase over 2009.

Venture-Backed Exits Rebound in 2010

Wednesday, January 5, 2011

After two years of stagnancy, venture-backed company exits improved dramatically in 2010, according to the National Venture Capital Association (NVCA). The increase was driven by a record-breaking market for acquisitions and the best quarter for initial public offerings (IPOs) in ten years. NVCA attributes the uptick in IPOs to a surge in Chinese venture-backed companies going public on U.S. exchanges.

Wednesday, March 6, 2013

Investing money from the state's pension fund, Colorado will partner with local CEOs and technology companies to create a $150 million VC fund to help get local tech startups off the ground, according to multiple news sources. The fund, expected to launch by summer, would be run by a consortium of business leaders who would contribute around $10 million each, while the state would be the largest LP, contributing money from pension funds, according to an article in TechCrunch. Creating Shared Value through Locally Focused Venture Capital Funds

Wednesday, March 6, 2013

In the January 2011 edition of the Harvard Business Review, Michael Porter and Mark Kramer called for a redesign of the existing business model and their role within society. Instead of simply embracing corporate responsibility and corporate giving, businesses should work to create shared value within their community by helping to support local clusters and institutions to address societal needs and issues.

Venture Investment Declines, While Angel Activity Ticks Upward

Wednesday, May 1, 2013

Both venture capital dollars invested and total deals declined in the first quarter of the year, according to the PricewaterhouseCoopers/National Venture Capital Association (NVCA) Moneytree survey. The capital-intensive life science and clean technology sectors were particularly hard hit, along with seed and early stage investments. Within the data, however, a number of bright spots remained for entrepreneurs seeking capital. Seed and early stage investments continue to comprise more than 50 percent of all deals and first-time fundings remain within a healthy range.

Clean Tech Venture Investment Declines, USDA Supports VC-Backed Clean Tech Firms

Wednesday, October 24, 2012

Clean Tech venture investments declined in the third quarter of 2012, according to the MoneyTree report released on Friday by PricewaterhouseCoopers (PWC) and the National Venture Capital Association (NVCA). The numbers reinforce the current trend of decreasing investment in clean tech companies and projects and the inherent challenges of VC backing in the sector. However, many are attributing this drop to a shift in the focus of clean tech investment by private and public entities rather than complete disenchantment in the promising sector.

Venture Investments Decline in Third Quarter

Wednesday, October 26, 2011

U.S. venture capital firms invested $6.95 billion in 86 deals in the third quarter of 2011, according to the more recent release from the PricewaterhouseCoopers and National Venture Capital Association (NVCA) Moneytree report. The figures represent a 12 percent decline in dollars and a 14 percent decline in since from the previous quarter, but an increase in both dollars and deals over the third quarter of 2010. Despite the loss compared to the previous quarter, national venture investment appears to be continuing its gradual rebound from the collapse in late 2008.

Startups Look Beyond Money When Selecting VC-Backing

Thursday, January 15, 2015

As competition increases within the venture capital industry to fund the next Google or Uber, the most highly desirable startups often have multiple investment offers and must decide upon the best. There are several factors that can affect evaluation of potential equity investors. For many startups, the decision may focus solely on the terms of the deal.

Is There a Crisis in Seed Stage Venture Capital?

Thursday, January 29, 2015

The first wave of year-end 2014 data on U.S. venture investment painted a portrait of a resurgent capital market. Investment activity reached its highest level of activity in a decade, finally shaking off the stagnation of the Great Recession (see last week’s article). Within the data, however, there were some concerning trends.

California-based companies received about 56 percent of all U.S. venture capital dollars in 2014, the state's highest share of venture activity since the dot com boom of the early 2000s. Over the past 15 years, investment activity has steadily become more concentrated in California and a few other states. Venture-Backed Exits Fall to Two-Year Low

Thursday, April 9, 2015

Only 17 companies had initial public offerings (IPOs) in the first quarter of 2015, the lowest number since the beginning of 2013, according to data from Thomson Reuters and the National Venture Capital Association (NVCA). This is a significant drop from the 37 IPO exits in the first quarter of 2014. Mergers and acquisitions (M&A) were also down, with 86 exits, compared to 115 in Q1 2014. While 2014 was an unusually active time for venture-backed exits, the current data appears to be a return to recession-era levels of deals and disclosed values.

Latest VC reports continue 2017’s Rorschach test

Thursday, October 26, 2017

Two 2017 Q3 venture capital market updates are not providing much clarity on the underlying state of the industry. Data on greater uninvested capital, larger deals and fewer exits, among other indicators, suggest that venture capital is in need of a market correction. At the same time, new fundraising, a move toward wider geographic distribution and the rise of alternative financial structures could speak toward the emergence of a more sophisticated market. In the absence of decisive indicators, the data allow for any number of explanations and predictions.

Are VC funds inflating a bubble?

Thursday, November 2, 2017

Through the third quarter of 2017, the venture capital market saw an average deal that invested more money into larger and older companies than in prior years. With fewer exits and deals occurring throughout the industry — as well as a historic $90+ billion in uninvested capital (aka “dry powder”) — a reasonable expectation might be that funds would have a difficult time raising capital.

With fewer exits and deals occurring throughout the industry — as well as a historic $90+ billion in uninvested capital (aka “dry powder”) — a reasonable expectation might be that funds would have a difficult time raising capital. In fact, fund raising, while likely to finish behind 2016, is set for another straight year with greater than $30 billion raised, and this money is going into more funds with an overall increasing fund size.

This leverage of $12.76 of private investment for every public dollar was further improved by more than $2 billion in subsequent private financing to date. Perhaps more significant than the program’s ability to attract private investors has been its success in generating investments outside of the nation’s most concentrated markets.

Startup Exits, Valuations Decline in First Half 2016, Reports Find

Thursday, September 29, 2016

After an extremely strong venture capital market in 2015, the industry seems to show the signs of a decline driven by both cautious and fatigued investors. Three recent studies from Pitchbook and CB Insights indicate that there are several reasons why venture capital firms and other investors have been more cautious so far in 2016 including: mixed economic growth numbers; a volatile political climate; and, more security in private markets.
