The Maryland Technology Development Corp. (Tedco) has committed $375,000 to fund technology transfer projects involving Department of Defense units affected by Base Realignment and Closure.

Up to $75,000 will be awarded to each of five Maryland companies that plan to transfer, or commercialize, a technology being developed in a government lab, or can provide its own private-sector technology to meet a military need.

"BRAC activities will undoubtedly bring many people to the area who have unique skills and understanding relevant to our technology economy," said Renee Winsky, president and executive director of Tedco. "This funding will enable Tedco to help the state further capitalize on BRAC, and grow its technology community," said Winsky.

The government's plan to realign and close DoD bases was determined by a congressional commission in 2005. In total 45,000 jobs would be relocated to Maryland from 2005 to 2011, representing the most significant job growth in the state since World War II, according to the Maryland Department of Business and Economic Development.

Montgomery Co.'s Fort Meade, Aberdeen Proving Ground, National Naval Medical Center, Andrews Air Force Base and Fort Detrick will start to experience this growth this year.

Thousands of new jobs are expected to come to Maryland:

  • 5,800 jobs at Fort Meade resulting from the relocation of the Defense Information Systems Agency, and the growth of National Security Agency.

  • 8,000 jobs at Aberdeen Proving Ground resulting from federal and contractor organizations.

  • 2,500 jobs at National Naval Medical Center resulting from the relocation of certain Walter Reed Army Medical Center units

  • 600 jobs at Andrews Air Force Base

  • 200 jobs at Fort Detrick resulting from the addition of the Walter Reed Forest Glen Annex as a Center of Excellence for Infectious Disease Research
