Science Foundation gets $500,000 for research

BYLINE: Ken Alltucker, The Arizona Republic

The Arizona Community Foundation will contribute $500,000 to three Science Foundation Arizona grant programs to support scientific research in the state.

Half of the funds will go toward Science Foundation's competitive advantage award program that identifies research projects with the greatest potential to secure additional federal grants. The money will help fund four Sun Health programs focusing on Alzheimer's disease and one at Arizona State University on Southwestern air-flow calculations.

The Science Foundation's small-business catalytic program for commercial initiative will get $100,000, and $150,000 will go to a program that funds research internships for high school science and math teachers.

The funds were provided by the Sybil B. Harrington Trust.
