Incentives package aimed at nearly 650 high-paying jobs in RTP

DATELINE: RALEIGH N.C.

State officials have approved at least $15.3 million in incentives for a California data-storage company if it meets a goal of creating 646 high-paying jobs at its Research Triangle Park campus.

The move would double Network Appliance's work force in the Triangle, where it employs 633 workers, The News & Observer of Raleigh reported Tuesday. The new jobs would pay average annual salaries of more than $94,000.

Under the proposal, Network Appliance must create the jobs during the next four years and sustain its payroll for another six years to receive the full package. The company, which helps businesses manage digital data, also must invest $41.5 million.

"These are very attractive, highly technical jobs with rather substantial salaries," Commerce Secretary Jim Fain said.

The company is based in Sunnyvale, Calif.

Gov. Mike Easley scheduled a news conference for Tuesday to make an economic development announcement, which is expected to be related to the incentives offer, the newspaper reported.
