SSTI Board of Trustees appoints two new members

The SSTI Board of Trustees has appointed Kristy Campbell, president & chief operations officer at Rev1 Ventures, and John Fernandez, chief executive officer at The Mill, as members of the board.  “I look forward to working with Kristy and John as new board members,” Dan Berglund, SSTI’s president, said with their appointments. “Both are proven, inspiring leaders, have been long time friends of SSTI, and demonstrated strong commitments to advancing the TBED community.”

The AI market is projected to reach $4.8 trillion by 2023—a 25x increase in just 10 years, according to the UN Trade and Development (UNCTAD) 2025 Technology and Innovation report. New SSBCI report reveals jurisdiction fund deployments

The U.S. Department of the Treasury (Treasury) recently released a report on the State Small Business Credit Initiative (SSBCI) program with data through December 31, 2024. As of the end of 2024, Treasury has disbursed nearly $4 billion of the $10 billion set aside for the program in the 2021 American Rescue Plan of Act.

ACA survey finds angels increased seed stage investment in 2021

The Angel Capital Association (ACA) reports seed stage investments accounted for almost 60% of the total angel deals in 2021, up from 50% in 2020.  These seed stage angel investments represented more than half of the $950 million invested by 180 ACA member groups in 2021.  ACA estimates that portfolio companies raised more than $5 billion, suggesting leverage of more than 5X their initial angel investments. Based on member-submitted direct investment data, the 2022 Angel Funders Report provides an overview of early stage investment trends.

AI hub in New Jersey opens as a state-university-industry partnership

Gov.

Gov. Phil Murphy and representatives from the founding partners—the New Jersey Economic Development Authority (NJEDA), Princeton University, Microsoft, and CoreWeave—officially opened the New Jersey Artificial Intelligence (NJAI) Hub on March 27, 2023. Together, the founding partners will invest over $72 million to support the long-term success of the hub. New Jersey’s NJEDA has committed $25 million; the remaining $47 million of donated services and support will come from Princeton and the industry partners. A portion of NJEDA’s and CoreWeave’s committed funding will include a planned NJ AI Venture Fund supporting innovation commercialization through equity investments.

With President Trump’s March 31 signature on an executive order to create a United States Investment Accelerator within the Department of Commerce aimed to help expedite development of foreign and domestic manufacturing investments priced at over $1 Billion, there is concern about what impact one sentence has on the existing $52 Billion in CHIPs related deals across the country. Some of the projects have been on ice since the change of Administration.

Compromise on SBIR reauthorization released; Congressional votes expected soon

It has been five long, dark months for the nation’s small innovation-focused businesses and the regional innovation systems that rely on them for their strongest startups and future leaders, but a ray of light appeared Wednesday afternoon as a compromise was announced on the stalled reauthorization of the federal SBIR/STTR programs. And, if passed as written, we won’t have to go through this again until September 2031, which shifts future debate until an off-election year.
